Using Birds as a focal point
Here the subject, moors south of Cadair Idris in North Wales, is lacking a focal point, sometimes a problem with open moorland, even if, as in this case, Cadair Iddris mountain can be seen looming in the background.

Moors in Snowdonia, Wales,
watercolour by David Bellamy |
The addition of a brace of grouse flying low over the moor has effectively introduced a focal point to the scene. Birds or animals can often be of help in this wasy. Note how their wings are blurred to suggest the frenetic wing movement of grouse taking off.
