Gathering Reference for Flowers
Making a detailed pencil sketch of your subject helps to resolve many issues, such as the tonal values, the positioning, what to include and what to leave out. It is better to make these decision in a pencil drawing than to keep changing your painting.
Capturing the light on the rims of the petals was my main objective here, but in the photograph you can barely see the detail in the skirts of the flower, The details gathered in the sketch helped to combine the two elements.
